Ironbridge Breaks Ground: 1990-1992

The cost of constructing a building was daunting to the small congregation. Yet these 22 families, through much faith and prayer, gave $180,000 in cash for the first building program. With the support of Virginia Baptist, the people maintained their spirit and belief in what God could do through them. With a grant from the Committee of Ministries of Virginia Baptist and a low-interest loan from the Baptist Extension Board of Virginia Baptist, the church proceeded.

Newspaper ArticleAs the August 14, 1988 groundbreaking ceremony was held for the construction of the first building, Pastor Mark spoke of a missionary vision of Ironbridge. He said, "Our purpose as a church is simple. We will be the friendliest church possible, helping people apply the truth of God's Word to the practical needs of everyday living."

As construction on the Ironbridge Road site began, the congregation grew rapidly at its temporary facilities on Hopkins Road. Trailers were used to accommodate the large number of Sunday school classes. A Deacon ministry plan was developed and the first Deacons were installed. By January 1989, Sunday school enrollment reached 263.

Painting the new building's interior, preparing the grounds, and landscaping were tasks that required a Christian spirit of cooperation. The members were blessed to receive help through Home Mission Board volunteers from Gastonia and Cullowhee, North Carolina.

The first official worship service was held in the new building July 15, 1990. It was a day of high excitement as the congregation praise God for its first permanent home. Pastor Mark's daughter was baptized in that service.

Under ConstructionAfter the church moved into its permanent location, the membership soared, and the church expanded its programs and ministries. Trailers were moved to the new location for Sunday school classrooms. Every available space was used for classes. Classes met in the sanctuary, the choir loft, and the church foyer. The youth group, and the youth and children's choir groups swelled. Special musical dramas were presented each year. The adult choir became known throughout the community for its Christmas and Easter musical ministries. By 1994, each cantata drew over 1,000 people attending the three-night performances.
