Christmas Store
An IBC contact person is needed who would be responsible for promoting and collecting items for the MDBA Christmas Store, and many donors of gifts are needed. Each church is assigned a particular type of gift to donate each year. (For example, toys for older children). Shop early and take advantage of end-of-the-season sales so you can give more for your money! Each qualifying parent is welcomed to shop for a nice outfit and toy for each child, paying 10% of the retail cost. There will be an expected 300+ children to be provided for Christmas. Volunteers are also needed to help with the stocking of the "store" and with the customers on the "shopping" days.
Contact Person: Brenda Green (MDBA secretary) at 804-276-8481 or E-mail: BrendaGreen@mdba.org, and check the Christmas Store web site by following this link.
State Fair of Virginia
Each September, Virginia Baptists set up a booth at the state fair to help fair-goers see Jesus. Volunteers man the booth for a few hours each throughout the course of the fair. Creative Ministries utilize acapella and acoustic musical groups, ventriloquists, magicians, jugglers and face painters to provide mobile entertainment on the fair grounds as well.
School supply collections
Throughout the year, but especially in the summer, school supplies are collected and provide to the needy children in the area’s county schools. Someone in IBC can coordinate a collection within the church, or individuals can take supplies to the offices of the MDBA at 9413 Hull Street Road, Suite D, Richmond, VA 23236.
Teaching English
The Tri-City Literacy Council needs volunteers who could help immigrants learn English. If you can read and speak English, you can help. No other skills or training are required. The Council will provide training for volunteers at various times during the year. Training is free. Students are assigned to volunteers after training is completed.
Contact Persons: Tri-City Literacy Council at 862-9262; or Bill Damon, Chester Baptist Church at 748-2939 or E-mail at bill@chesterbapt.org
